Virtual Film Screening and Filmmakers’ Talk: Coby and Stephen Are In Love – May 13, 6pm PDT

Poster image for “Coby and Stephen Are In Love”. Coby, an elderly Asian-American woman, walks alongside Stephen, an elderly white man. She carries an acoustic guitar in one hand and a duffel bag in the other. He carries an electric keyboard in one hand and in the other a pair of bongos and a duffel bag. She wears a beige knee-length skirt and a patterned jacket and matching pillbox hat; he wears brown pants and shirt with a brown vest adorned with large beige polka dots. They walk on a sidewalk next to a beige stucco building, to their right are two parked cars and some small bushes. Above them are 14 white film festival laurels; large white text next to them reads “Coby and Stephen Are In Love: A Film by Carlo Nasisse and Luka Yuanyuan Yang”

Join us online on May 13, 6pm PDT, for a virtual screening of the short film Coby and Stephen Are In Love, celebrating the unlikely relationship between an Asian-American burlesque star of the 1940s and ’50s and a white hippie child of the ’60s twenty years her junior. United by their love of dance, the two built a life together through shared aesthetic virtues.

We will be joined by the film’s directors, Luka Yuanyuan Yang and Carlo Nasisse, who will discuss their inspiration in making the movie, their relationship with the film’s subjects, and their next upcoming projects. The screening and talk will be followed by a Q&A and a sneak peak at Yang’s latest project, Women’s World, which also features Coby Yee as a central figure.
