The Burlesque Hall of Fame has a collection of nearly 5,000 costumes, photos, posters, personal effects, stage props, and other material related to burlesque history. We are happy to work with other institutions or independent curators to provide pieces for exhibition, produce entire exhibitions, and license digital imagery.
Loan of objects from BHoF collection
Loans are available to museums and other institutions with skill trained in the handling and mounting of artifacts, particularly fragile costume pieces. We will work with you to select appropriate objects to suit the purpose of your exhibition and the context in which the material will be displayed.
Loan fees help cover our expenses and ensure the proper treatment of objects on loan. For major artifacts (costumes and other physical items larger than one foot in any dimension), our loan fee is $250/object. For smaller pieces, our loan fee is $150/object. Original photos can be loaned for $75/piece.
The Burlesque Hall of Fame requires at least 60 days lead time to fulfill any request. Shipping to and from the borrowing organization are the responsibility of the borrower. The borrower also must ensure that adequate climate control, security measures, and insurance are in place to prevent any damage or cover losses that may occur.
Use of digitized photos
The Burlesque Hall of Fame has digitized a large part of our collection, including around a thousand photographs. High-resolution digitized photos can be licensed for exhibition use (including promotion of the exhibition) for $50/piece. Commercial use including publication will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Exceptions for small nonprofits and scholarly use
Museums and other organizations with budgets under $500,000/year will be charged 50% the rates above.
Researchers seeking images for use in illustrating academic work (journals, conference sessions, work published by academic presses, etc.) may request already-digitized images at no charge. Where material not already digitized must be located in the archive and digitized, the requester will be charged $20/hour with a minimum of $100, in accordance with our Researcher Access policy.
Acknowledgements
All physical objects (including photographic prints) borrowed from the Burlesque Hall of Fame must be credited as “Collection of the Burlesque Hall of Fame”, in some cases with the specific collection identified (for example, “Collection of the Burlesque Hall of Fame, Dixie Evans Collection”). Digital images provided by the Burlesque Hall of Fame must be credited as “Photo courtesy of Burlesque Hall of Fame”, with the photographer’s name included when known (for example “Photo by Maurice Seymour; photo courtesy of Burlesque Hall of Fame”).
Additional or modified acknowledgments may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis and will be included in the loan and/or licensing agreement.
Copyright
All photos taken by Burlesque Hall of Fame are copyrighted by Burlesque Hall of Fame and all rights are reserved except those specifically outlined in the loan or license agreement.
Many objects in our collection, particularly photographs, programs, posters, and similar material, have additional copyrights which would be held by the original creator, and which Burlesque Hall of Fame is not able to assign, transfer, or license.
By general practice, photographs produced before 1978 which do not have a copyright notice on them are considered public domain; additionally, promotional photographs (which make up a large part of our collection) are considered public domain as their primary purpose was to be copied widely and indiscriminately by promoters, venues, and press.
Most uses for which this material will be suited will fall under fair use, but it is the responsibility of the licensee to determine how the law applies to their particular use. We cannot provide specific legal advice on which uses would be considered fair use nor how viable a defense fair use might be in any given circumstance.
